My Chronicle Book Box Review: Louise's thoughts...
This is the second book Andrew has written with Agatha Christie herself as the protagonist in a crime mystery rather than the author. I was lucky enough to come across the first novel A Talent for Murder when it was released last year; I loved it and knew then that I wanted to share the follow up with you all in our book boxes.
On reading A Different Kind of Evil in advance of it’s release I was thrilled that it stood alone sufficiently to be included in the August book box. It is one of my requirements that any book we include can be enjoyed fully without any prior reading being required and this was the only potential obstacle I could foresee to including this book in the box.
Both books are an extraordinary combination of the real life events known about Agatha Christie and Andrew’s boundless imagination. I can only imagine that this methodology stems from Andrew’s work both as a biographer and as a novelist. I admire the way Andrew has so cleverly woven a story around the historical events; at the back of each book you will find the details of the known facts. I just adore the idea of Agatha Christie working for the British Secret Intelligence Service however this is not one of the factual details in the book.
Andrew taps in to our fascination with Agatha Christie herself and our love of her classic crime mysteries, to produce a brilliant new novel. He was also kind enough to sign bookplates for us and give an exclusive interview just for our subscribers.
And that cover? Just stunning!
Are you tempted? Have you read it? Let me know your thoughts!
Publisher: Simon & Schuster UK
Publication date: 31 May 2018
Publisher Synopsis:
In January 1927 – and still recovering from the harrowing circumstances surrounding her disappearance a month earlier – Agatha Christie sets sail on an ocean liner bound for the Canary Islands.
She has been sent there by the British Secret Intelligence Service to investigate the death of one of its agents, whose partly mummified body has been found in a cave.
Early one morning, on the passage to Tenerife, Agatha witnesses a woman throw herself from the ship into the sea. At first, nobody connects the murder of the young man on Tenerife with the suicide of a mentally unstable heiress. Yet, soon after she checks into the glamorous Taoro Hotel situated in the lush Orotava Valley, Agatha uncovers a series of dark secrets.
