Today I begin reading, re-reading I should say, A Discovery of Witches, the first book in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness, in real time. This has become an annual tradition among fans of the Trilogy and this is my first year of joining in the fun.
The books is set over a period of forty days from 18 September to 31 October so I will be reading it as the story unfolds, sometimes reading several chapters one day and potentially going a few days without reading anything depending on the plot. To assist me with this endeavour I have downloaded the free (at least as at today's date 18 September 2016) ebook guide to reading it in real time.
The idea of reading a book for the first time in this fashion intrigues me but I know my limitations: there is no way I would have the patience to do it!
I plan to review the book and ramble on about how I found the experience once it has been completed on 31 October but I would like to say up front that I adore these books. Deborah Harkness is a historian, a professor at the University of Southern California no less, and her passion for history comes through on every page of the book. But it is more than that which makes these great books, it is her passion for people and places and the history behind them that comes through in her writing.
"It begins with absence and desire.
It begins with blood and fear.
It begins with a discovery of witches."
- Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches
