A My Chronicle Book Box review: The Ice House by Tim Clare

This is a beautifully written book and you won't be surprised to hear that Tim Clare is also an accomplished poet. It's also dark, monstrous, action packed and very detailed.

This book was included in our August 2019 Science Fiction & Fantasy book box.

My Chronicle Book Box Review: Louise's thoughts...

What grabbed me immediately about this book was the description of life as an 86 year old. The frustration of the infirmities of old age are not something you read about too often, especially in the main character of a fantasy adventure novel and Tim Clare’s portrayal of this was so good I knew I was in for a treat for the rest of the book.

It is beautifully written and you won't be surprised to hear that Tim is also an accomplished poet. It's also dark, monstrous, action packed and very detailed. It is written from two different points of view, Delphine Venner from our world and Hager, a centuries old assassin trapped in a childish body from another, darker world. Delphine's first experience of the inhabitants from the other world was when she was a thirteen year old child but it takes until she is 86 years old before she travels through the portal between these worlds.

Although this is loosely a sequel to an earlier book, it has a very different feel to The Honours (which I read immediately after The Ice House) and you don’t need to read that first so long as you pay close attention. I got the feeling that Tim Clare doesn't want you to know exactly what's going on until he is ready to reveal it.

My advice? Take yourself off somewhere quiet to really take in and saviour every action packed detail of this amazing novel. You are going to love no nonsense Delphine!

I was delighted both that Tim Clare signed our first edition copies AND with the exclusive interview he gave us. We asked Tim to share with us 5 things he would like his readers to know - did you know Tim has recently discovered Dungeons & Dragons and is now hooked?

Publisher Synopsis:

War doesn’t end. It sleeps.

Delphine Venner is an old woman now. She is old, but she remembers everything. She remembers what it is to be a child of war, she remembers fighting for her life and she remembers what the terrifying creatures from another world took from her all those years ago. She remembers the gateway, and those she lost.

And in that other world, beast-filled and brutal, someone waits for her. Hagar, a centuries-old assassin, daily paying a terrible price for her unending youth, is planning one final death: that of her abhorrent master, the Grand-Duc. The death that will cost her everything. The death which requires Delphine.

Voyaging into this violence and chaos, Delphine must remember who she really is and be ready to fight once more, as war reawakens. In the battle to destroy an ageless evil, will both worlds be saved – or will every mortal creature lose everything?
