My Chronicle Book Box Review:

The Confession is a new standalone novel from the hugely talented Jo Spain, best known for her Inspector Tom Reynolds mysteries. It has an unusual structure and starts with a shocking bang hooking you from the very start and not letting up until the very end.

Although it begins with a brutal murder the rest of the book is not so bloody so don’t be put off if, like me, gore is not always to your taste!

We are immediately introduced to the main characters Harry McNamara, millionaire disgraced banker, Julie his wife and JP Carney who hands himself into the Police (the Irish Garda) and confesses to murdering Harry. But why has JP killed Harry? Even JP himself does not seem to know why he did it.

We then get the story leading up to the murder from three different points of view, Julia’s, JP’s and Sargeant Alice Moody’s. Alice is the investigating officer and her voice adds a touch of humour to the narrative.

This book was surprising, unpredictable and brilliantly written. The way the secrets, lies and truths were revealed throughout meant I could not put it down.

Publisher Synopsis:

SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE NOT ALL THEY SEEM…

SOMETIMES THE TRUTH HIDES A SECRET…

SOMETIMES A CONFESSION IS THE BEGINNING… NOT THE END

Late one night a man walks into the luxurious home of disgraced banker Harry McNamara and his wife Julie. The man launches an unspeakably brutal attack on Harry as a horror-struck Julie watches, frozen by fear. It looks like Harry’s many sins – corruption, greed, betrayal – have finally caught up with him.

An hour later the intruder, JP Carney, hands himself in, confessing to the assault. The police have a victim, a suspect in custody and an eye-witness account, but Julie remains troubled.

Has Carney’s surrender really been driven by a guilty conscience or is this confession the first calculated move in a deadly game?

THE MOST GRIPPING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER OF 2018: PERFECT FOR FANS OF THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR AND THE GIRL BEFORE.
